Spotlight on e-governance: SOMAN BABY

E-GOVERNMENT experts from around the world are to meet in Bahrain next week for an international conference and exhibition. More than 30 international and regional speakers will be addressing a wide array of e-government issues at the inaugural Government Technology Middle East Conference and Exhibition (GOVTEC), being held in Bahrain from Monday (Feb 13) to Wednesday (Feb 15).

It will be held under the patronage of Commerce and Industry Minister Dr Hassan Fakhro and is being supported by the Central Informatics Organisation (CIO).

The event is being organised at the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre by Media Generation in strategic partnership with the CIO, the Bahrain Convention and Exhibition Bureau (BCEB) and Dubai-based ITP Events.

GOVTEC will feature international case studies from Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, Ireland, Scotland, Dubai, Egypt and Bahrain.

It will debate key issues facing public sector administrators such as open source architecture, IT governance, citizen-centric government and public private partnership.

Leading thinkers addr-essing the conference include Dr Simon Moores, vice-chairman of the Conservative Technology Forum; Dr Costis Toregas, president emeritus of the Public Technology Institute; and Christine Leitner and Jeremy Millard, who respectively represent the European Institute of Public Administration and the Danish Technological Institute.

In addition, the conference also features presentations by Dubai e-government services head Salem Al Shair, CIO IT Director-General Mohammed Al Amer, UK Deputy Prime Minister's office strategic consultant Chris Hadden and senior e-government officials of Taiwan, Singapore, Ireland and Scotland.

"We are very pleased with the quality and diversity of the speakers - this is by far the region's most comprehensive and content-rich conference on the subject of e-government," said Media Generation Group managing director Paul Stott.

"With three days of strategic presentations by an unrivalled roster of recognised e-government visionaries, the conference offers an outstanding opportunity for public sector officials to share experiences, examine case studies and identify best practices."

The conference runs alongside an exhibition featuring a wide array of specialised e-government solutions from leading vendors.

Key sponsors and exhibitors participating in GOVTEC 2006 include Microsoft Corporation, IBM-GBM, Batelco, Tata Consultancy Services, Novell, NCS, Crimsonlogic, Al Faris Information Technologies, Somac IT and ZFP-IT.
