Election committee launches website

[The Peninsula - 14/02/2006]
As a step forward towards democracy, the Permanent Election Committee yesterday formally launched its Internet portal that aims at educating Qatari nationals about the various aspects of elections.

The portal offers rich content including how elections are held, the role of the candidates and the electorate, rights of voters and those seeking mandate, experiences from the two elections held for the Central Municipal Council and how to participate in polls to the Advisory Council, among others, Dr Sheikh Khalid bin Jabor Al Thani, Deputy Chairman, PEC, disclosed.

Dr Khalid yesterday formally inaugurated the portal on behalf of the PEC Chairperson, Sheikha Aisha bint Khalifa Al Thani. The PEC functions as part of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs.

At a press conference, Mariam Al Khater, PEC spokeswoman said, the portal also contains information specifically targeted at female citizens. It contains topics related to democracy and the democratic process, how to be a candidate or volunteer for future elections in Qatar and other poll related issues. These, she said, were specially meant to encourage women to participate actively in the democratisation process.

In addition, the portal also will offer a database of election volunteers and facilitate PEC board members to be contacted online. It allows for top PEC officials to post notices for Qatari nationals, an electronic copy of the Qatari Constitution and its various provisions, laws and by-laws and a variety of other resources.
