Watmore will retain ties to e-government

As head of the Cabinet Office E-Government Unit, Watmore was responsible for formulating IT strategy and policy across central government, developing common IT components

for use across government, promoting best practice across government and delivering citizen-centred online services. He also chaired the CIO Council of central government CIOs.

"Most of the initiatives launched during my time in this role are owned by the CIO Council, who remain responsible for their implementation," Watmore told Computer Weekly. He said he would still sit on this council and work closely with other members and the new head of the E-Government Unit.

"I will maintain overall responsibility for the work of the E-Government Unit in my new role at the Prime Minister's Delivery Unit," said Watmore.

The move comes less than three months after Watmore launched his government IT strategy, Transformational Government - Enabled by Technology, with the promise that public sector IT was "on the verge of an era of delivery".

Andrew Stott, deputy CIO, will be acting as head of the E-Government Unit and CIO until Watmore's replacement is appointed.
